Update : 22 Aug 2013, 01:00 AM

A Bangladeshi-born Canadian passport-holder was killed in Wednesday's Malaysia road crash that claimed at least 37 lives, reports Malaysian National News Agency.

Two of the deceased have been identified as Bangladeshi. THey are-- Rafik Ali Chowdhury and Bhuiyan Rifique Ali.

The toll could climb, however, as 16 other passengers were injured, with hospitals reporting some in critical condition.

Bernama, the official news agency of Malaysia, said four Bangladeshis are undergoing treatment at Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Selayang Hospital in Malaysia.

The injured Bangladeshis are-- Ali Haider Syed Haider, 46, Rownak Arefin, 14, Rashidah Bhuyan, 50, and Rezwan Arefin, 24.

Authorities said the bus was carrying 53 passengers when it went off a swerving road and plunged down a steep 70-metre slope in the Genting Highlands, famed for a flashy gambling and entertainment resort about an hour's drive from the capital Kuala Lumpur.

Local hospitals said several of the injured arrived in critical condition.

Lines of rescuers clinging to an orange rope for support were seen pulling injured victims out of the bus shortly after the accident, which occurred around 3pm.
