4 Bangladeshis arrested amid immigration crackdown under Trump presidency

The arrests were carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in plain clothes

Four undocumented Bangladeshi nationals were detained in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday.

The arrests occurred during a nationwide crackdown on undocumented immigrants, which has intensified under the new Trump administration’s stringent immigration policies.

The arrests were carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in plain clothes in the Fulton area of Brooklyn, reported Prothom Alo.

Since assuming office on Monday, Trump has implemented sweeping changes to immigration policy, including signing 47 new executive orders and revoking 78 orders from the Biden administration.

These changes are part of his broader agenda to curb undocumented immigration and increase border security.

During his inauguration speech, Trump claimed that millions of undocumented immigrants were crossing the US border and engaging in criminal activities. He pledged to “immediately close the border” and prioritize the deportation of undocumented individuals involved in such offenses.

A state of emergency has been declared along the US-Mexico border, where security measures have been significantly heightened. Additionally, the US Border Patrol has suspended programs that granted immigration status to certain groups, further tightening entry pathways for migrants.

Another controversial measure involves the elimination of birthright citizenship, which would deny automatic US citizenship to children born to undocumented immigrants.

However, this executive order has been met with legal challenges in 24 states and cities, as it contradicts the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution. If overturned by federal courts, the order could become void.

The crackdown has had a visible impact on Bangladeshi neighborhoods in the US. Once-bustling streets and restaurants in these areas are now noticeably quieter. Security measures have been heightened, further fueling apprehension among residents.
