In a grave turn of events, a Bangladeshi student has been shot dead inside a coffee shop in the US.
The victim is Sheikh Abir Hossain, a graduate research assistant doing his PhD at Lamar University in Texas, confirmed Mohammad Shahin Khan, a professor at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research of (DU) Dhaka University.
He died around 9am Bangladesh time on Saturday, the DU professor claimed. However, no details about the incident could be known immediately.
Hailing from Satkhira, Abir previously obtained his post-graduation and graduation degrees from the institute.
Abir was living in Beaumont of the US state of Texas since moving there from Bangladesh in January, according to Shahin.
After completing his studies at DU, Abir worked at the Brac NGO and Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology.
In a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon, Shahin wrote: “Out of disappointment, Abir went to the US to pursue higher studies and for a better future.
“But his dreams are shattered now. An assailant took his life. We lost a truly modest, well-mannered and brilliant student…” the DU teacher added.
As of December 7, at least 40,167 people have died from gun violence in the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
It translates into an average of almost 118 deaths each day, with Texas being among the states with the highest fatality rate.
