In six US states, at least 1 in 500 people have now died of coronavirus, while daily Covid-19 deaths nationwide are climbing to levels not seen since early in the pandemic.
The list reflects the far-reaching toll of the crisis, spanning early hot spots such as New York, Southern states hit hard in the summer and rural parts of the US with increasingly strained hospitals.
On Sunday, South Dakota became the latest to hit this grim marker, with others on the cusp as the country surpassed 26 million known coronavirus cases.
The state had logged 1,775 confirmed and probable deaths from Covid-19 since the pandemic, according to pandemic data website Worldometer. With a population just shy of 9 hundred thousand people, that amounts to about one death out of every 500 residents of the state.
Apart from South Dakota, 1 out of every 500 people in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Mississippi states has died due to the outbreak.
As of Sunday, New Jersey had logged 21,455 confirmed deaths.
New Jersey is approaching 200 deaths per 100,000 residents since the pandemic began. That death toll is higher than any state in the US and far above the country’s national rate of 85 deaths per 100,000.
Besides, the number of deaths due to Covid-19 in New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Mississippi on Sunday was 43,539; 14,531; 2,154 and 6,018 respectively.
