Assaulted by robbers, Bangladeshi immigrant dies in NY hospital

A Bangladeshi immigrant living in New York, US died in hospital on January 31, months after he was severely assaulted during a robbery in Queens, New York. Mohammad Alam, 72, had been on life support since September 28, 2017 after he was sucker-punched during a mobile phone robbery by a group of teenagers in front of MIM Wireless on Hillside Avenue in Queens, reported the New York Daily News. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where doctors said he had suffered severe brain damage. He was later shifted to St John’s Hospital, where he was put on life support, New York police said. The police authorities are now mulling murder charges against 16-year-olds Shyquan Kimble and Jaleel Steele, the two teenage boys who attacked Alam, according to the news report. Alam’s relatives said he was a construction contractor in Bangladesh before he moved to the US a few years ago for better medical care for his blind wife.
