In a landmark development, leaders of the Gulf nations have given the green light to a revolutionary unified tourist visa, resembling the Schengen visa in Europe, with the aim of boosting tourism and fostering regional unity.
This groundbreaking decision means that individuals can now explore the diverse landscapes and cultures of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman with a single visa, simplifying the travel experience for tourists.
Saudi Arabia's Minister of Tourism, Ahmed bin Aqeel Al-Khatib, made the announcement during the 44th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit held in Doha on December 5. The Gulf leaders have instructed their respective ministers of interior to implement the new visa scheme.
While the path to implementation involves the intricate task of integrating systems and addressing security aspects, as reported by Khaleejtimes, industry insiders are optimistic about the potential benefits.
Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, the UAE's Minister of Economy, revealed that specific regulations and legislation for the visa are currently in development.
The targeted rollout is anticipated between 2024 and 2025, contingent upon the readiness of each GCC country's internal systems. Concurrently, the Gulf states are actively working on establishing a comprehensive framework for visa fees to ensure a seamless and secure implementation of the unified Gulf tourist visa.
With this newly introduced unified Gulf tourist visa, travellers can anticipate a hassle-free experience, exploring the rich cultural tapestry and breathtaking landscapes of six Gulf nations with a single travel permit.
Insiders predict that major beneficiaries of this innovative visa framework will include the UAE, particularly Dubai, and Saudi Arabia. Dubai's global tourist destination status, coupled with Saudi Arabia's appeal for religious tourists visiting Makkah and Madinah, is expected to create a robust flow of tourists between these influential countries.
