Update : 09 Dec 2013, 02:26 PM

Russian president Vladimir Putin on Monday abolished Russian state owned news agency RIA novosti, report kremlin sources.

According to the sources, from now on a news agency called Russia today will replace RIA. Dmitry Kiselev, known as a hardcore kremlin supporter, will lead the agency.

Head of Kremlin administration Sergey ivanov told journalists: “The news agency is being restructured in order to make it more economical while increasing its reach.”

The authority has decided it for more rational use of public money,” he added.

Despite being a state owned agency novosti tried to make balance on its news and often critical to Kremlin, a report of BBC claimed.

Reporting on its own demise, RIA stated in its news report that "the move is the latest in a series of shifts in Russia's news landscape, which appear to point toward a tightening of state control in the already heavily regulated media sector".

kiselev, the head of Russia today, is known for his ultra conservative views. Recently he used harsh language against homo sexual and used abysmal comments.

Voice of Russia, another state owned media has also been closed.
