Rushanara Ali, a Bangladesh-origin UK shadow minister for international cooperation, Friday called on the British government to exert pressure on Myanmar authorities to urgently address the humanitarian crisis the Rohingyas are facing in that country.
Myanmar President Thein Sein is likely to visit the UK soon.
His London visit “is a unique opportunity” for Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague to press him and his government to address some of the key human rights issues, she said, according to a press release.
She expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Rakhine state and the ongoing human rights abuses against the Rohingyas and other minorities in that country.
“It is crucial that the UK government and the international community continue to press him” to make real the commitment he made to stop all forms of discrimination and bringing all perpetrators to justice, the British MP said.
