Two youths of Bangladeshi descent have been jailed in the UK for a 2019 attack in east London which left a 23-year-old named Alimuz Zaman to suffer fatal injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The victim succumbed to the injured hours later.

The convicts are Almal Islam, 22, and Mofizur Rahman, 21, with ommunity leaders confirming that the three were of Bangladeshi-origin, reports Bangla Tribune.

Following the conclusion of a trial at the Old Bailey on Monday, Almal was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum 22-year-term. Mofizur was handed down a minimum term of 24 years.

The court heard how the duo, both armed with weapons, attacked Alimuz in St Paul’s Way, E3 at around 4:30pm on May 26, 2019.

Witnesses reported that they targeted Alimuz, with Mofizur stabbing him in the leg and Almul assaulting him with a wrench.

Critically injured, Alimuz was rushed to a local hospital but died from his injuries later that night.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the death was caused by heavy blood loss due to stab injury.

Both suspects were identified by a number of witnesses and CCTV confirmed their involvement in the attack. As the investigation gathered momentum, both Almal and Mofizur handed themselves in to a police station four days after the attack. They were arrested and subsequently charged with murder.

Detective Sergeant Gurj Singh from the homicide team who investigated the murder said that was a violent and brutal attack carried out in the middle of the street on a Sunday afternoon.

“It is clear from witnesses who were at the scene that Almal and Mofizur targeted Alimuz. Both had attended the scene armed with weapons and both had the intent to inflict serious harm on him,” he said.

However, neither Almal nor Mofizur has revealed why they attacked Alimuz in such a brutal and obvious manner, the police officer continued.

“This attack has understandably caused significant shock and distress to Alimuz’s family and the wider community and I hope these convictions bring some sense of justice to those affected,” he concluded.
