The number of deaths reported from a stampede in a central district of the South Korean capital Seoul has risen to 120, a fire official said.
The incident took place at about 1320 GMT as a large number of people fell down in a narrow alley during the Halloween events.
Previously, another official claimed that at least 59 people died from cardiac arrest and dozens of others were injured after a huge crowd poured into a central district of the South Korean capital for Halloween festivities late on Saturday.
Yonhap news agency said at least 100 were estimated to have been injured.
Choi Seong-beom, chief of Seoul's Yongsan fire department, said the death toll could grow as emergency workers were continuing to transport the injured to hospitals across Seoul following the stampede in the leisure district of Itaewon Saturday night.
Choi said 13 of the dead have been sent to hospitals while the bodies of the remaining 46 were still on the streets.
Officials say it was believed that people were crushed to death after a large crowd began pushing forward in a narrow alley near Hamilton Hotel, a major party spot in Seoul.
More than 400 emergency workers and 140 vehicles from around the nation, including all available personnel in Seoul, were deployed to the streets to treat the injured.
Videos from the scene show body bags on the streets, emergency workers performing CPR, and rescuers trying to pull people trapped beneath others.
President Yon Suk-yeol presided over an emergency meeting with top aides and ordered the dispatch of emergency medical teams to the area, with probe underway to find the exact cause of the incident.
There were reportedly 100,000 revellers in the area celebrating the first outdoor no-mask Halloween event since the Covid-19 pandemic.
