Aiming to strengthen agricultural collaborations between researchers from Canada and Bangladesh, the Ministry of Agriculture has set up a Bangabandhu Chair at University of Saskatchewan's Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS).
As a tribute to Bangladesh's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Chair will coordinate agricultural research and development between Saskatchewan and Bangladesh, says a statement from the Agriculture Ministry.
Andrew Sharpe (PhD), GIFS’ director of genomics and bioinformatics, has been appointed as the chair of the newly established Bangabandhu Research Chair.
The chair will offer PhD opportunities to six researchers from the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) and 15 researchers will be offered postdoctoral research opportunities as demanded by Bangladeshi institutions, the statement said.
On Sunday, Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque inaugurated a regional office of the GIFS of the University of Saskatchewan at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in Dhaka.
Abdur Razzaque said the Saskatchewan region has a worldwide reputation for producing versatile and quality agro-food.
“As a result of opening this office in Dhaka, their technology and experience can be utilized. Cooperation between Bangladesh and Canada in the field of agriculture will be further strengthened,” he added.
A four-member delegation led by Andrew Sharpe attended the program and discussed the selection of PhD and post-doctoral researchers.
