A New York District court has sentenced a US national to life imprisonment for murdering a Bangladeshi immigrant in 2012.
Queens Supreme Court Justice Gregory L Lasak sentenced David Louime to 23-year life imprisonment on Tuesday. Louime was convicted of second-degree murder in May after a 10-day jury trial.
According to the trial testimony, 32-year-old Louime brutally assaulted Isteak Quadir, 51, during a brawl which ensued at a Jamaica, Queens pub called Hillside Inn on September 13, 2012. Isteak was playing pool with a friend there.
At one stage, Isteak was knocked to the floor and was defenceless when the Louime repeatedly punched and stomped him.
According to Queens District Attorney (DA) Richard A Brown, the 51-year-old suffered severe brain damage as a result of the beating inflicted by the Louime and was left in a semi-vegetative state for approximately 15 months until his death.
Isteak died of brain injuries in May 14, 2014.
