A 9-year-old Bangali girl from Manchester has completed a 40km charity walk to raise £14,535 (Tk 17,45,224) for street children in Bangladesh.
After watching a disheartening video about street children during Ramadan, Hannah Miah reflected on how fortunate she was having a family and home, according to media reports.
She knew she wanted to contribute, and she set a goal of £1,000 for herself. She surpassed her target and raised over £14,000 for the cause, thanks to overwhelming community support.
Hannah hoped that her efforts would raise awareness of the everyday challenges that street children face, and that they would result in the rescue of as many children as possible.
According to the UN, there are an estimated 600,000 street children in Bangladesh.
They are often abandoned or trafficked into the most heinous of circumstances, where they are exposed to the hazards and perils of street life.
Children are fleeing violence or harassment in the majority of cases, and they end up in Dhaka at various entry points such as the ferry terminal, bus terminal, and central train stations.
Hannah's Mum, Jewel Miah, said: "The support from everyone in the community has been unbelievable and has brought everyone together.
"Hannah's School, Lyndhurst Primary, have also been supportive and are proud of her achievements."
Her challenge included members of her local football team, Red Star Bengal FC, her family, and friends from various towns walking, biking, or cycling over 1500km before the start of Ramadan.
Hannah received The Oldham Pledge high achievement award and Morrisons' Little Sunshine in the community award for her charity work
Jewel said: "The response and support from the whole community, including councillors and her school, has made me feel extremely proud.
"Hannah has inspired many children, young people, and parents to get involved in community and charity work. She is passionate and genuinely cares about the Street Children and wanted to do something to help them."
Hannah met her £1,000 target in two days, and everyone encouraged her to keep on with the initiative. The next goal was to collect £10,000 before Ramadan ended on May 13, which she accomplished on Friday, April 30.
