“Paddington 2” has beat out “Citizen Kane” as the top rated movie on popular US-based film and TV show review website Rotten Tomatoes.

According to The Wrap, this development has happened, thanks to a negative review from 80 years ago.

Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” is popularly known as one of the greatest movies of all time, and its Rotten Tomatoes score displayed the same, with 155 positive reviews about the film.

However, when someone under the username of “Mae Tinée” - an alias commonly used by Chicago Tribune film critics - posted an old negative review, it made an impact on the movie’s perfect score.

An excerpt from the review read: “It’s interesting. It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece. But it's [sic] sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of a distinction and general entertainment value.”

The 1941 review changed the score for the movie from 100% to 99%, making “Paddington 2” the top rated movie on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Paddington has 244 positive reviews, beating Citizen Kane’s 115.

“Paddington 2,” directed by Paul King, was released in 2017 and was subject to widespread critical acclaim. The movie centres on the fictional character Paddington Bear, voiced by Hugh Grant, Sally Hawkins, Hugh Bonneville, and Ben Whishaw.

Following the news, users on Twitter exploded with passionate reactions.

One fan said on twitter: “Please don’t misinterpret the adjusted Rotten Tomatoes rankings to mean that Paddington 2 is now the best movie of all time.

“Paddington 2 already was the best movie of all time. thank you.”

Another fan said: “[Sic] paddington 2 has double the reviews as citizen kane. thus, it has been the Best Film since its release,, film bros can't pretend citizen kane held anything over it... embarrassing! Paddington 2 Supremacy!”

Earlier in February this year, Studiocanal confirmed to Variety that “Paddington 3” was in progress, however details about the third instalment are still unavailable.
