The United Nations committee against torture will review the human rights situation in Bangladesh under the Convention against Torture.
The committee will review Bangladesh along with Greece, Poland, and Togo in Geneva from July 22 to August 9.
The above mentioned countries are among the 166 States who are parties to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, and so are required to undergo regular reviews on how they are implementing the Convention.
The committee is scheduled to publish its findings on the respective States on 9 August, and to hold a press conference on the same day.
The committee against torture monitors a State’s adherence to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which to date has 166 States as parties.
The Committee is made up of 10 members, who are independent human rights experts, drawn from around the world, who serve in their personal capacity, and not as representatives of the State parties. The Committee’s concluding observations are an independent assessment of States’ compliance with their human rights obligations under the treaty.
