Watch: NASA’s IMERG satellite examines heavy rainfall in Bangladesh

Update : 17 Jun 2017, 08:37 PM
Heavy rainfall affected the southeastern parts of Bangladesh from June 12 to 14, killing at least 156 people as it caused flooding and landslides in parts of the Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari districts. NASA, through the use of its IMERG satellite, conducted an analysis of the deadly downpour. Of the 156 lives claimed by this year’s monsoon rains, the district of Rangamati alone suffered 114 losses. The torrential rain followed in the wake of Cyclone Mora, which hit the same area a couple weeks ago. The rainfall analysis at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, using the near real-time Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) shows the heaviest accumulation of rainfall on June 14, with the average rainfall reaching above 500mm. The IMERG estimates indicated that the landslide inducing rainfall totals were greater than 510 mm. The resulting heavy fall wreaked havoc throughout the hilly areas of the country, with 114 deaths in Rangamati, 32 in Chittagong, 6 in Bandarban and 2 each in Cox’s Bazar and Khagrachhari. The rain also caused road blockages, shortages of fuel and rises in the prices of vegetables. The heavy monsoon rain is expected to continue affecting these areas of Bangladesh for the near future.
