The Bangladesh open team finished 64th while the women’s side ended in 56th position in the 41st World Chess Olympiad which was held in Tromso, Norway.
The open team that earned 12 match points out of 11 matches lost their 11th and final round game against Sweden by 1-3 points on Thursday.
In the last round, Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman drew with GM Grandelius Nils and GM Niaz Murshed drew with GM Aitbayev Aslan. GM Abdullah Al Rakib lost to GM Hillarp Persson and GM Enamul Hossain lost to GM Tikkanen Hans.
In the women’s section, Bangladesh garnered 12 match points out of 11 games and in their last round game on Thursday they beat Zambia by 2.5-1.5 points. WIM Rani Hamid beat Mbatha Constance, WFM Sharmin Sultana Shirin beat Saina Yvonne, WIM Shamima Akter Liza drew with Mwango Lorita and WFM Zakia Sultana lost to Hamoonga Linda Banti.
Meanwhile, Chine became the first Asian country to win the tournament in the open section with 19 points, Hungary came 2nd and India was placed 3rd with 17 points each.
In the women’s section, Russia emerged champions with 20 points. China finished 2nd and Ukraine concluded their campaign in 3rd with 18 points each.
