Mohammad Fahad Rahman, the youngest Fide Master of the country, emerged as the unbeaten champion in the Union Insurance 34th National Junior (Under-20) Chess Championship yesterday.
Fahad, the national sub-junior champion, lost point for the first time in the tournament yesterday when he drew with Avik Sarkar in the 9th and final round at the Bangladesh Chess Federation hall-room. Despite dropping points, Fahad secured the junior title as he earlier won all eight matches.
Last-time junior champion Ikramul Haque Siam of Narsingdi finished second with eight points. Avik Sarkar of Mymensingh grabbed 3rd place while Anata Chowdhury of Dhaka stood 4th with seven points.
Meanwhile, Zaharatul Zannat Zisha won in the girls’ section with seven points while Protiva Talukdar of Rajshahi became runner-up with Sumaiya Khondoker of Narayanganj finishing 3rd.
In the last round matches held yesterday, Siam beat Muhit, Munia drew with Rafshan, Anata beat Akib, Zisha beat Momo, Minhaz beat Bakar and Protiva drew with Swarnavo.
