Reigning champion Grandmaster Niaz Murshed and Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman registered victories in the 2nd round of the Berger Paints 39th National ‘A’ Chess Championship at the Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) media centre yesterday.
At the end of the day,Shafiq Ahmed of Golden Chess Clubled the table after defeating Mohammed Hafizul Islamto gain a full two points after the round.
Niaz of Mohammedan, playing with the black pieces in a Bogo Indian game topped Fide Master Mehdi Hasan Porag of Access Group in 38 moves. Meanwhile, Zia beat Fide MasterMohammed Javed of Access Group with the white pieces in a Trompowsky attack game in 32 moves.
In the match between Grandmasters, Abdullah Al Rakib and Enamul Hosain Razib drew their game. International Master Minhazuddin Ahmed Sagar beat Fide Master Sk Nasir Ahmed, FM Kh. Aminul Islam drew with IM Abu Sufian Shakiland Md Jamal Ahmed drew with FM Debaraj Chatterjee in the day's other games.
In the third round today, Sagar will face Shakil, Chapal takes on Zia, and Niaz plays Razib.
