Update : 16 Aug 2024, 08:00 AM

At least two sports federations received threats, with one already coming under attack, and two Bangladesh Premier League club offices were vandalized in the last one and a half week after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government.

Dhaka Tribune earlier reported on the act of vandalism at record league champions Abahani Limited where trophies alongside other items were stolen, while Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club also faced a similar fate soon after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister on August 5.

Angry mobs also attacked other lower-tier clubs.

The clubs were helpless in the face of destruction of offices and stealing of hundreds of trophies among many belongings of the two premier league powerhouses.

Everything that is “sellable” were stolen from Abahani while on the premises of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club after a day it came under attack, it was heard that money, gym equipment, TV, among other things, had been taken away by the mobs.

Many other clubs in the capital also suffered similar consequences in the following days.

The attack on the national gymnasts was on the horizon, according to the victims including the players, coach and the general secretary of Bangladesh Gymnastics Federation.

They had been facing threats in the past few days, from some who claimed to be student protesters.

At the Bangladesh Amateur Boxing Federation, the joint secretary Md Motaleb said the federation was attacked and threats were dished out in almost similar fashion.

“They are doing whatever they can in the name of student protesters. We can’t open up,” said Motaleb.

He added: “The previous government has fallen, we will nod to whatever the new government tells us to do.”

“Yes, threat,” replied the joint-secretary who was in his hometown Jessore when asked if they had received threat.

He continued: “And vandalized. They took possession of the rooms and locked them.”
