Country’s lone archer at the Paris Games 2024, Sagor Islam is all set to begin his debut Olympic campaign Thursday, a day before the official inauguration of the mega multi-sports show.
Sagor is scheduled to compete in the Men's Individual Ranking Round at the Invalides venue.
The score will decide his ranking as well as the first opponent in the elimination round.
Among the five Bangladesh Olympians at the 2024 Games, Sagor is the only player from the country who earned direct qualification as he won silver medal in the Final World Qualification Tournament in Antalya, Turkey earlier this year that guaranteed him a spot.
At the Tokyo Games 2020, it was Ruman Shana who qualified directly and he was the first ever archer from Bangladesh to achieve the spot through direct qualification.
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics Games will be held at River Seine Friday.
A 13-member contingent, including eight officials, is representing Bangladesh in the 33rd edition of the Olympic Games, the biggest multi-sports extravaganza on earth.
The country will be participating in four sports - archery, athletics, swimming and shooting.
Sagor and shooter Robiul Islam were the first to take the flight last Saturday.
The two swimmers - Samiul Islam Rafi and Sonia Khatun – left here for Paris Monday midnight while United Kingdom-based sprinter Imranur Rahman was slated to fly to the French capital from the UK.
Robiul, who missed the direct qualification spot narrowly by only 0.3 point, will take his rifle to compete in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification event Sunday.
Rafi will take part in the heat of Men’s 100m Freestyle at Paris La Defense Arena Tuesday while Sonia will be in the pool for Women’s 50m Freestyle heat at the same venue on August 3.
Country’s faster sprinter Imranur, the eldest athlete among current Bangladeshi participants, is set to compete in the 100m sprint, perhaps the most glamorous event of the Olympics.
He will run in the Men’s 100m preliminary round at Stade de France on August 3.
Archer Sagor will carry the Bangladesh flag in the opening ceremony.
The general secretary of the Bangladesh Shooting Sports Federation and Bangladesh Olympic Association joint secretary, Intekhabul Hamid Apu, was named as the chef de mission of the Bangladesh contingent.
Some 10,500 athletes from 206 countries will compete in 32 sports in the battle of 329 events.
There are 35 venues for the 19-day competition, scheduled to conclude on August 11.
All five Bangladeshi athletes will be competing in the Olympics for the first time.
