Ritu Akter took her impressive form abroad as the Bangladesh Army athlete clinched silver medal in women’s high jump event at the Malaysia Open Athletics Championships.
The six-day long competition began Thursday with the participation of 550 athletes.
Seven athletes from Bangladesh are taking part in the meet with Ritu the only female member of the contingent.
She is also representing the country alone in women’s high jump.
The medal is a just reward for Ritu’s continuous development over the years.
She has broken the women’s national record in the same event several times in the last three and a half years.
In January 2021, she jumped 1.70m to set a new record before breaking her own with 1.75m-jump in December, 2022.
The 23-year old high-jumper set a new record again in the last summer meet with her 1.76m effort at Bangabandhu National Stadium, home of country’s athletics, in February this year.
In Malaysia, Ritu secured the second podium spot, jumping 1.75m, which showed the sign of consistency in her game.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Jahir Rayhan also made his mark on the Malaysian track as the Bangladesh Navy sprinter clocked 22.26s to reach the semi-finals of the men’s 200m event of the same competition.
