A total of 12 Bangladeshi players are set to begin their Asian Games 2023 campaign in singles as they will take part in six disciplines, including respective individual and team events, in Hangzhou, China Sunday.

The six sports are shooting, boxing, chess, swimming, gymnastics and taekwondo while cricket, football and hockey players will also take the pitch in their respective team fixtures.

Bangladesh never managed a medal from the aforementioned individual disciplines with the exception of a bronze in boxing, and that too a long time ago through the hands of boxer Mosharraf Hossain in men’s light heavyweight category at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games.

Zinnat Ferdous, the 29-year old Bangladeshi-American female boxer, will compete in the 50kg event’s preliminary round at Hangzhou Gymnasium in the afternoon representing the red and green flag.

The first events of the day will feature three shooters – Kamrun Nahar Koly, Shaira Arefin and Nafisha Tabassum – in the individual and team qualification round of women’s air rifle at Fuyang Yinhu Sports Center, followed by the finals.

Taekwondo events will be held soon afterwards featuring Ruma Khatun and Nooruddin Husain in the men’s and women’s individual poomsae respectively at Lin’an Sports Culture and Exhibition Center.

Gymnasts Sangkheong Khumi and Abu Saeed Rafi will participate in the individual all-around and apparatus qualification and team events at Huanglong Sports Center Gymnasium.

Grandmaster Enamul Hossain Razib, International Master Fahad Rahman and Noshin Anjum will represent Bangladesh chess in men’s and women’s individual events at Hangzhou Qi-Yuan Chess Hall in the afternoon.

Young swimmer Samiul Islam Rafi, 18, will try his luck in the heat of men’s 100m backstroke event of swimming at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Center’s Aquatic Arena early in the morning.
