Ashik records Bangladesh’s best result at World Archery compound event

This is Bangladesh’s best finish in the compound events of the tournament, the high-ups of archery federation told Dhaka Tribune

Mohammad Ashikuzzaman brought unprecedented result for Bangladesh in the compound event of the World Archery Championship as he became the first compound archer from the country to finish jointly at ninth in the ongoing edition of the competition which is taking place in Berlin, Germany.

This is Bangladesh’s best finish in the compound events of the tournament, the high-ups of archery federation told Dhaka Tribune.

Earlier, Ruman Shana won bronze medal in the men’s recurve event of the 2019 World Archery Championship which is still the country’s best achievement till date.

“Ashik’s performance brought the best result for Bangladesh in compound event at World Archery. It shows that we are also progressing well in the compound event,” said Bangladesh Archery Federation’s general secretary Kazi Razib Uddin Ahmed Chapol.

Former national archery coach Mohammad Ziaul Hoque is currently in Berlin as the head coach of Saudi Arabia archery team and watched Ashikuzzaman in action at the venue.

Ziaul told Dhaka Tribune over phone, “I know Ashik from early age. He has experience and knowledge and utilized both. He also coped with the weather here and did tremendously well.”

Ashikuzzaman defeated French archer Girard Nicolas in the first round (1/48) of compound men’s individual event before edging past El Salvador’s former Pan American Games champion Hernandez Roberto (1/24) who previously had medals in World Archery Championships, World Cup Stage and World Games.

He went on to beat Tjin-A-Djie Jay of the Netherlands in the following round (1/16) before losing to Deotale Ojas Pravin of India in the 1/8 Elimination Round.

Meanwhile in the men’s recurve event, Mohammad Hakim Ahmed Rubel was knocked out of the 1/16 Elimination Round to finish jointly at 17th.
