Update : 04 Jul 2013, 04:25 PM

Fahad Rahman, the country’s youngest Fide Master and winner of the Open Under-10 group in the 14th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship in Chiang Mai, Thailand last month, was given a reception by the Gemcon group – his sponsor organisation – at the corporate house’s head office in Dhanmondi Thursday.

Last month’s victory earned the 10-year-old Fahad the title of Fide Master with a rating of 2038, as well as a desire to emerge as the country’s youngest Grand Master.

“My ultimate target is to become a Super Grand Master and I am confident to reach the target if I get enough support,” said the national junior champion.

“At the moment, I am having lessons on all the basics of chess and once I master all those techniques, I will concentrate more on regular real life practice against tougher opponents,” he added.

Gemcon Group has been sponsoring Fahad from May this year. The group has been providing a monthly allowance for the talented youngster’s education, as well as providing logistical and financial support for his foreign tours.

Gemcon director Kazi Inam Ahmed expressed the hope that Fahad would be able to live a balanced life as he continues developing his chess skills.

Inam said, “Fahad made the nation proud with his achievement and he should continue his career with chess, but one thing has to be made sure that his childhood is not lost in rush of chess.

“He should spend time with his friends and family, should play other games as well as chess and should study like all children of his age.”

Saeed Ahmed, head of human resource and administration of Gemcon Group, Mostaque Amin, chief operating officer of Gemini Sea Food, Shoib Ahmed, the chief operating officer of Kazi and Kazi Tea, and Shaheen Khan, the chief operating officer of Meena Bazar, were among those present at the reception.
