Fahad Rahman, the wonder boy of Bangladesh chess, showcased his ability in a superb showing to clinch the title in the Open Under-10 group of the 14th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Thursday.
With the fabulous effort, Fahad Rahman is set to become the youngest FIDE master in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Chess Federation arbiter Harunur Rashid said, “Fahad is all set to attain the Fide Mastership as the earlier declared that the champion of the meet will be awarded with the title of Fide Master.”
The former national junior champion was in good form and he won 15 of his 19 matches in two categories and drew two of the others. “I was confident to put a good show but never thought to win the title. However with the time, I grew in confidence and though that I can win the title. I concentrated hard and at last won the title” said Fahad.
Fahad said it was his third foreign tournament after Asian Youth in Sri Lanka and Asian School Championship held at Delhi last year. “I felt that I lack the international experience as my opponents I saw that played more international tournaments, though they are of my same age. I felt that I have to work hard to attain more success,” said Fahad.
Fahad was asking for chess software for practicing specific strategies, which he saw during the tour in Thailand. “I need a chess software’s to prepare myself for the future challenges. These type of software are designed to practice certain specified skills and thus is more effective,” explained the young champion.
Fahad’s latest achievement follows his gold medal win in the Under-9 group of the 8th Asian Schools Chess Championship at New Delhi India last year.
Nazrul Islam, Fahad’s father, who accompanies his son overseas, thanked the Gemcon Group, who are Fahad’s sponsor, and expressed the hope that the assistance would continue.
