The four South Asian Games gold medal winning sports – karate, weightlifting, taekwondo and fencing – have to share two venues in the capital as the Bangladesh Olympic Association almost confirmed the disciplines and venues for April’s Bangabandhu Bangladesh Games.

A total of 31 disciplines and 22 venues were finalized by Wednesday for the ninth edition of the country’s largest sporting extravaganza, scheduled to be held from April 1 to 10, seven years after its previous edition took place in around 14 venues.

Due to not having its own venue, karate, that earned three gold medals in the 2019 SA Games, will be held at Shaheed Suhrawardy Indoor Stadium  where fencing, judo, and volleyball events will also take place.

Weightlifting, only discipline that won gold in the last two SA Games, also have to share the National Sports Council Gymnasium with gymnastics and taekwondo.

However, two notable venues have been added.

Shaheed Ahsanullah Master Stadium will host archery and Sheikh Russel Roller Skating Complex will stage roller skating and wrestling.

The number of disciplines remained unchanged from the last edition but squash has been excluded while roller skating has been added for the first time.

The initial fixtures of men’s and women’s cricket will be held in Sylhet and Cox’s Bazar respectively.

The venue for cycling event has not been finalized yet but BOA vice-president Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Mamun informed that the event could most likely be held in Gopalganj.

Mamun, also the chairman of the steering committee of the Games, said the number of athletes will be increased from the previous edition where there were 6,855 participants.

The Games will officially be inaugurated on April 1 but the events of football, hockey, badminton, chess, gymnastics, volleyball and wushu will begin before that.

Football events will start from March 24.
