State minister for Youth and Sports, Zahid Ahsan Russell believes the sports clubs of the country should be run under the auspices of his ministry in order to make these organizations accountable, read a press release produced by the ministry.

Recently, a massive crackdown of the law enforcing forces found the existence of illegal casinos in some clubs of the capital, tarnishing their image. On Tuesday, during a press meet, Russell opined that the ministry should get the authority of providing the clubs registration and be in charge of monitoring to ensure their accountability.

“Finding casinos in sports clubs is a huge disappointment. Most of the clubs in the capital are limited companies, so the ministry does not have the authority of monitoring them. It is time to change the law,” said the state minister.

“The image of sports arena is shattered. The people who are involved in the casino business must be given optimum punishment under legal jurisdiction,” he added.

Earlier, the state minister met representatives of different federations to observe the centenary of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The meeting decided on organizing 89 events including 39 international ones with a budget of Tk306 cr.
