In most territories of Bangladesh, young people have the pitfall of drug addiction but also have its antidote in shape of sports but the youth of Raninagar Upazilla at Naogaon District is deprived of the latter.
The upaziSome former organizers claim they were successful of organizing various tournaments and they recommended of forming new committee with veteran sportspersons from the localitylla with an area over 250 square Kilometres and over 2 lac people has a sports association but it has been inert for the last 15 years or so.
Once upon a time, in the 80s and 90s of the last century, Raninagar was a hotbed of talented players as many of its players won prizes in district level and won interschool competitions. But that golden era is long gone and the observers of that epoch can only sigh with grief about the current dilapidated situation.
“Current government is sports friendly. The government has taken various steps to keep the young people away from drugs through sports and find talented players. But there is no such programme at Raninagar. The sports association of this upazila has no activities currently. It has been inert for last 15 years,” said a former player Tikka Khan.
Some former organizers claim they were successful of organizing various tournaments and they recommended of forming new committee with veteran sportspersons from the locality.
“We won Gold Cup tournament during my era. In order to activate the stagnant sports association a new committee must be formed with veteran sportspersons of the upazila through an election,” said former general secretary of upazila sports association, Kazi Harunur Rashid.
And the incumbent officials of the association said they have some plans to speed up its activities.
