The UCB Club Cup Hockey rolls on to the field today with the game between Sonali Bank and Shadharan Bima at 1pm at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium. The second game on the opening day will see giants Abahani Limited take on Dhaka Wanderers Club at 3pm.
A total of seven clubs, split into two groups, are taking part in the tournament which is scheduled to end on January 15. Usha Krira Chakra, Azad Sporting Club and Ajax are placed in Group A while Abahani, Sonali Bank SRC, Dhaka Wonderers Club and Sadharon Bima KC features in Group B.
Azad Sporting Club earlier boycotted the tournament along with for other rebel hockey clubs – Mohammedan SCL, Mariners Youngs, Wari Club and Bangladesh Sporting Club – who declared not to play under the current executive committee and remained out of the tournament. However, Azad Sporting changed their mind at the last moment and confirmed their participation.
