Sukesh Murmu slammed a brace as holders Dinajpur district successfully defended their title to become the champions of the 3rd Walton Indigenous Hockey tournament yesterday. Dinajpur outplayed Bandarban by 5-2 goals in the final at the Maulana Bhashani hockey stadium.
Bandarban can only blame their luck for losing their third consecutive final of the competition.
They lost to Rangamati in the first indigenous hockey final back in 2004, before they lost to Dinajpur in the previous edition last year.
Sukesh Murmu netted two goals in the 15th and 23rd minute while his team-mates Hridoy Murmu, Subrata Chandra Ray (penalty corner) and Parimol Madi added one apiece for the eventual champions. Saddam Hossain scored both the goals for the losers in the 40th and 49th minute of the game.
Sukesh Murmu was adjudged the player of the meet while he also received an android phone from the sponsor organisation. Including the final, Sukesh netted three goals in the tournament.
Champions Dinajpur received Tk20,000 while Bandarban were handed Tk15,000 as runners-up. Players from both the finalists received a wooden hockey stick each while two LCD televisions were also presented to the teams.
Vice president of Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) Harunur Rashid distributed the prizes among the players as chief guest. Senior deputy director of Walton FM Iqbal Bin Anwar Don was also present during the presentation ceremony.
