Sk Russel struggle, Brothers stroll

Update : 17 Apr 2015, 08:54 PM

Sheikh Russel continued their fine start in the Manyavar Bangladesh Premier League and also halted Mohammedan’s winning run in the top-flight as the Blues pipped the traditional Black and Whites 1-0 at Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

Out-of-favour national defender Rezaul Karim Reza notched the all-important goal at the hour mark to salvage all three points for Sheikh Russel, who grabbed their second consecutive victory.

The Black and Whites though began the game as the brighter of the two sides. They seemed a spirited side from the onset and managed to dominate midfield but were unable to create any clear-cut chances due to the lack of quality and experienced players in the centre of the park.

Sheikh Russel, in contrast, started slowly but appeared a totally different unit after resumption. Once they took the lead, Sheikh Russel’s defence held strong until the end.

Besides Reza, national winger Zahid Hossain also impressed. The fleet-footed winger assisted Reza’s winner to take his assist count to three in the league this season. Impressively, Sheikh Russel have also scored three goals in two matches this season, and Zahid has assisted all of them.

Both Sheikh Russel and Mohammedan have six points although the latter have played a game more.

Meanwhile in the day’s other match at the same venue, Brothers Union earned a comfortable 3-1 win over Farashganj SC, thanks to a brace from Nigerian Adams Jankasa.

Following a barren first half, Jankasa put the Oranges ahead five minutes into the second half, heading home a free-kick while Augustine Walson doubled the lead just five minutes later.

Promoted side Farashganj reduced the arrears 11 minutes from time courtesy Nigerian midfielder Akinyele Peter.

Jankasa netted his second and his side’s third in the 85th minute to enable Brothers to four points from three matches while Farashganj are yet to open their account after two matches.
