Ace Bangladesh women’s team forward Sabina Khatun is eyeing glory and is confident of enhancing the image of the country as the first female footballer of the country to play in a foreign club.
Sabina will fly to Maldives today to play for Police Club in the Maldives Women’s Football Fiesta, comprising 14 teams. The tournament will be held in Male, the capital city, from March 14-April 17.
Sabina, who has scored 116 local and 10 international goals in her five-year career, will pocket around $1000 for her services. The club will also provide air fare and accommodation.
Hailing from Satkhira, Sabina said she will represent Bangladesh and will try to enhance the image of the country. “Obviously, it is a great achievement. I will try to put up the best show and be the highest scorer. I will try my best to uplift the image of the country. As far as I know, this club became runners-up last year. I will target improving the club’s results,” said Sabina before adding, “Our last international tournament was the SAFF Championship in Pakistan. I scored two goals against Maldives. I think that result inspired them to choose me.”
She also expressed her gratitude to the football federation. “I would like to thank the football federation for processing everything that enabled me to avail the opportunity. I am grateful to them. It is a big opportunity and a matter of pride for me” said Sabina.
Sabina said she will try to provide inspiration for the future generation. “In my opinion, Bangladesh women’s football is ahead of Maldives. I hope to do a good job and open the door for other footballers also,” she added.
In a press conference held at BFF House yesterday, Mahfuza Akhter Kiron, deputy chairperson of the women’s wing and member of the executive committee of AFC’s women football, revealed her excitement over Sabina’s venture. “We are very proud that Sabina will fly for Maldives to play for Police Club. It is a sign of the country’s development in women’s football. We hope the numbers will increase in the future,” said Kiron.
BFF general secretary Abu Naeem Shohag was also present on the occasion.
