Jamal breeze past Mohun Bagan

Update : 27 Nov 2014, 08:42 PM

Bangladesh Premier League champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club powered their way to the semifinals of the King’s Cup with a dominating 5-3 win over Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan at Thimphu, Bhutan yesterday.

Landing Darboe and Emeka Darlington registered a brace each while Wedson Anselme netted the other for Sheikh Jamal though the latter’s celebration was shortened due to the marching order he received in the dying minutes for his second bookable offence.

The facile victory saw Sheikh Jamal top the Group A with seven points and set up a semifinal date with defending champions Manang Marshyangdi of Nepal tomorrow. The defeat, however, caused little trouble for Mohun Bagan as they too qualified for the last four stage and will meet another Indian powerhouse FC Pune in the second semifinal.

The match created a lot of hype due to Haitian striker Sony Norde who played for the Bangladeshi club last year before moving to Kolkata this year. However, for unknown reasons Norde was rested in the match.

Emeka put Jamal ahead in the 5th minute before Landing doubled the joy in the 16th minute. Wedson converted a penalty in the 31st minute while Emeka added his second in the 54th minute to put Jamal on a four-goal cushion inside the hour mark.

Pankaj Moula reduced the margin scoring the first for the Kolkata outfits in the 56th minute before Japanese midfielder Katsumi Yusa spiced up the encounter by scoring the second just two minutes later.

However, a solo effort from Landing saw the difference increase to 5-2 in the 60th minute. Pierre Boya’s strike in the third minute of the five-minute stoppage time only reduced the deficit for Mohun Bagan while Jamal’s party was spoiled with the last minute send-off of Wedson.
