Barcelona edged Espanyol on penalties to win the Catalan Super Cup on Wednesday at the Estadi Montilivi in Girona.
Barça were in absolute domination of the ball, although real chances to extend on their lead were seriously lacking. All the same, it took 41 minutes for Masip to get the chance to show his worth, and he certainly showed that worth by defying Víctor Álvarez in a one-on-one.
After the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes the teams went directly to penalties, where Barca prevailed 4-2.
Luis Suarez set up Gerard Pique to score for Barcelona in the 15th minute. Taking possession in the box, he danced around a defender and crossed for Pique to head in at the far post.
Espanyol had a chance to equalise in the 41st minute on a two-on-one break but Jordi Masip saved a shot from Víctor Alvarez.
Anaitz Arbilla curled a free-kick into the top corner to level for Espanyol six minutes into the second half.
Luis Enrique made eight substitutions in the second half, but Barca could not find a winner.
In the penalty shootout, Masip saved a shot from Arbilla and Abraham shot wide before Ivan Rakitic clinched the victory with his next kick.
