Dhanmondi giants cruise to win

Update : 23 Mar 2014, 04:06 PM

Abahani Limited and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club kicked off their Modhumoti Bank Independence Cup campaign with comfortable victories over their respective opponents at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

Cameroonian striker Ekele Patrick netted a brace as Abahani cruised to a 2-0 win over 10-man Arambagh Krira Sanga before Haitian international Sony Norde’s brace helped Sheikh Jamal thrash Uttar Baridhara 4-0.

The traditional Sky Blues dominated the opponents from the start of the match and came close in several occasions. Ekele squandered a chance in the 22nd minute before Abul Kashem made a goal line clearance to deny Awudu Ibrahim’s effort. Arambagh were reduced to 10 men in the 42nd minute when forward Monwar Hossain was shown a straight red for allegedly using abusive words towards the referee. The protest from the victims saw the game go in to a seven-minute break before the half finally ended goal less.

Abahani took the advantage of an extra man as Patrick put the Sky Blue ahead six minutes in the second half. The Cameroonian slotted the ball home after receiving a through pass from Osei Morrison. Patrick netted his second of the day ten minutes later after placing the ball past Biplob Kumar Bishnu following a cross of Awudu Ibrahim.

Meanwhile in the day’s other game, Sheikh Jamal enjoyed majority of the ball possession as they killed the game scoring four goals in the first half.

Sony broke the deadlock in the 16th minute with a chip over the goalkeeper before in form Nigerian forward Emeka Darlington doubled the lead two minutes later with a volley on a Sony rebounder.

Sony scored his second of the evening six minutes later following a simple pass from Wedson Anselme. Sohel Rana completed the rout in the 35th minute after Sony’s shot came off the keeper, only to see Sohel firing it back.
