Shahjalal Islami Bank Ltd stepped ahead to sponsor the football team of Wari Club in the Bangladesh Championship League yesterday.
It was a noble gesture from the bank as they decided to assist the second tier club of the professional league in the country. The bank initially handed over a cheque of Tk160000 to the club and assured more in course of time.
It would be mentionable that Wari Club is the oldest football club in the country and has been playing in the local football leagues since 1901.
Shamsuddoha Shimu, the vice-president and the head of the public relations of SIBL, said they came forward to help the club as it grooms players.
“Instead of tagging with the big names we thought it would be better to get involved with Wari Club who have a tradition and producing good players. We hope Wari will revive its glory,” said Shimu.
Wari Club general secretary Shahiduzzaman, joint secretary Mohidur Rahman Meraj and BFF general secretary Abu Naeem Shohag were also present on the occasion.
