Dhaka giants Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club went down 1-2 to Kolkata Mohammedan in the 118th IFA Shield at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Salt Lake yesterday.
Jamal took the lead in the first half through their Haitian forward Sony Norde but two second half goals by Ashim Biswas and Brazilian forward Joshimar saw Mohammedan romp victory.
Jamal had a good start with midfielder Sohel Rana hitting the side-post in the 14th minute. The Dhaka outfit however was rocked by their Nigerian attacker Emeka Darlington and skipper Mamunul Islam receiving yellow cards in the 25th and 28th minutes respectively. Nonetheless, Jamal took the lead in the 41st minute when Sony Norde scored with a long range effort.
Three minutes into the resumption, Mohammedan earned a penalty but Josimar’s spot kick was knocked away for a corner by Jamal goalie Ziaur Rahman. It was from another corner that Mohammedan were able to equalize in the 58th minute, through Asim Biswas’ bicycle kick.
Joshimar made up for his missed penalty in the 85th minute when he lobbed the ball over Zia and into the net in a one-on-one situation. The result all but guarantees Mohammedan a semi-final spot, after they were awarded a full three points over the protest of United Sikkim, with whom they drew 1-1.
Jamal plays Kolkata giants Sikim United in their second match on Wednesday.
