Russell complete registration

Update : 14 Nov 2013, 06:28 PM

Despite losing a number of key players after last season’s historic treble winning campaign, Sheikh Russell Krira Charka are still hopeful of repeating the success this year as they completed their players’ registration process yesterday. The club arrived at the BFF House without a single player or even the coach.

The newly emerged Bangladesh Premier League giants have the fewest number of players registered of the four clubs who already completed their transfer formalities. Sheikh Russell submitted a total of 20 players’ registration forms to the BFF yesterday with foreign players on the list. With the transfer window closing today, the club expected to register their foreign recruits by that time.

Russell are not the same team as they were last season. The depth and strength of the team decreased after losing vital players like Sony Norde, Mamunul Islam, Zahid Hossain, Linkon, Zahid Hasan Ameli and Nahidul Islam. The club failed to bring in the right men as replacements but the club officials are still optimistic about the coming season.

“We are confident that we will fill up last season’s missing point by winning all four championship in the upcoming season,” said Saleh Zaman Selim, director of sports of Sheikh Russell KC, who also claimed that they are closing in to sign a German playmaker.

Russell coach Maruful Haque, however, did not seem to be as confident with the current squad, especially the latest losses of Zahid and Nahid to Mohammedan on Monday.

“The team was good the day before yesterday. But after the players, we have to change our target. This time the challenge is tougher than last season. Still I believe I can put together the whole team before the league starts,” said Maruf yesterday.

Maruf admitted it will be hard for him to replace midfielder Mamunul and striker Sony Norde as the duo joined Sheikh Jamal for record fees.

“The team is broken. There is a huge gap in the midfield after the departure of Mamunul. But I’m hopeful with Mithun. We have to look forward to foreign recruits to replace Sony,” added Maruf.

Russell already brought in Jamaican Ricardo, who showed his skills in training but Maruf believed he is not like Sony and more a midfield player. Two Moroccan strikers Rock and Yunus are currently playing with the club and will play in the Federation Cup.
