France, Netherlands look to justify title credentials

Reporting from Houston | World Cup 2026 coverage

Update : 30 Jun 2026, 06:05 AM

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup moves firmly into the knockout phase, the margin for error has disappeared and the tournament is entering its true defining stretch.

Monday’s Round of 32 action delivers three fascinating contests spread across North America, with traditional European heavyweights and ambitious challengers all fighting for a place in the last 16. From Mexico to Dallas and New York, the stakes rise significantly as teams begin the long march toward the final.

The spotlight first falls on the Netherlands, one of the standout attacking teams of the tournament so far. Ronald Koeman’s side topped Group F with seven points and an impressive 10 goals scored, underlining their growing credentials as serious contenders.

Having reached the latter stages consistently in recent World Cups without ever lifting the trophy, the Dutch know this could be another golden opportunity, particularly with a favorable route opening in their side of the bracket.

Standing in their way is a confident Morocco side that continues to build on its historic semi-final run in Qatar four years ago.

The Atlas Lions matched Brazil stride for stride in the group phase and arrive unbeaten, once again proving they are no longer outsiders on football’s biggest stage. Their clash with the Netherlands could easily be one of the most tactical and evenly balanced ties of the round.

Ivory Coast meet Norway in another compelling encounter. The African side have reached the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup history and will look to continue their remarkable campaign, but Norway possess one of the tournament’s most lethal weapons in Erling Haaland.

Meanwhile, in New York, tournament favorites France begin their knockout journey against Sweden, with Didier Deschamps’ star-studded squad aiming to maintain their perfect start and reinforce their status as title contenders.

The action begins in Monterrey where the Netherlands face Morocco in what promises to be a high-quality battle between two unbeaten sides.

The Dutch attack, led by Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey, has looked fluid throughout the group stage, but Morocco’s disciplined structure and dangerous transition play through Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Diaz could create major problems. It feels like a match that may be decided by a single moment of quality.

Attention then shifts to Dallas, where Ivory Coast will test Norway in a clash between two attack-minded teams.

The Elephants have impressed with defensive organization and growing confidence, but Norway’s hopes once again rest heavily on Erling Haaland, whose four goals have carried the Scandinavians into the knockout stage. If the Manchester City striker finds space, Norway may have the edge.

France look to continue their commanding form against Sweden. Les Bleus have been among the most complete sides in the tournament, scoring 10 goals in three wins, with Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele in electric form.

Sweden possess pace through Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga, but against France’s firepower and depth, the 2022 finalists appear overwhelming favorites to march into the last 16.
