Liverpool's decision to part ways with Arne Slot has quickly shifted attention from the Dutchman's departure to the man expected to replace him, with Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola emerging as the frontrunner to take charge at Anfield.
The Reds announced Slot's dismissal on Saturday after a disappointing Premier League title defence, despite spending nearly £450 million on new signings last summer. While Liverpool stressed the decision was made with "great reluctance", the club said it believed a "different approach" was needed to move forward.
That approach appears likely to come in the form of Iraola, one of the most highly rated young coaches in European football.
The 43-year-old Spaniard has enhanced his reputation dramatically during his time at Bournemouth, guiding the south-coast club into European competition for the first time in their history. His side finished sixth in the Premier League after an impressive 18-match unbeaten run, ending the campaign only three points behind Liverpool despite operating with far smaller resources.
Iraola's tactical philosophy is also believed to align closely with Liverpool's vision for the future. The club reportedly wants a more aggressive, front-foot style of football after criticism that Slot's team had become too cautious and predictable during the past season.
His relationship with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes could further strengthen his candidacy. Hughes appointed Iraola during his time at Bournemouth, and the pair enjoyed a successful working partnership before Hughes moved to Anfield.
Liverpool's hierarchy are understood to be keen to appoint a successor quickly, and Iraola is available after leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season. Although the Spaniard has attracted interest from several clubs, including AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen and Crystal Palace, Liverpool are expected to be at the front of the queue for his signature.
The club's supporters had hoped for a return of former midfielder Xabi Alonso, but the Spaniard is set to take charge of Chelsea, leaving Liverpool to look elsewhere for a new leader.
Iraola's rise through the coaching ranks has been rapid. After impressing at Rayo Vallecano in Spain, where he earned praise for his high-intensity pressing style and ability to maximise limited resources, he continued that success in England with Bournemouth. His teams are known for their energy, attacking intent and tactical flexibility — qualities many Liverpool fans believe have been missing during the club's recent decline.
The challenge awaiting Iraola at Anfield would be substantial. Liverpool endured a turbulent campaign that included the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota, inconsistent performances from several high-profile signings and growing unrest among supporters.
Slot, who guided Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English league title in his debut season, leaves with his reputation largely intact despite the difficult campaign. However, Liverpool's owners concluded that the team's trajectory required a fresh direction.
If appointed, Iraola would inherit one of Europe's biggest jobs and the responsibility of restoring Liverpool as genuine Premier League title contenders. For now, all signs point to the Spaniard being the man chosen to lead the next chapter at Anfield.
