Former Bangladesh national football team captain Mamunul Islam brought the curtain down on a distinguished playing career as he featured in his final professional match on Friday.

The veteran midfielder made his last appearance for Fortis FC in their Bangladesh Football League encounter against Rahmatganj MFS at the Bashundhara Kings Arena. Fortis signed off with a thrilling 3-2 victory, providing a fitting end to Mamunul’s long and decorated journey in the sport.

Mamunul, 40, enjoyed a professional career spanning more than two decades, during which he represented several of the country’s leading clubs, including Abahani Limited Dhaka, Mohammedan Sporting Club Dhaka, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, Sheikh Russel KC, Muktijoddha Sangsad KC and Chittagong Abahani.

On the international stage, he served as captain of the Bangladesh national football team for a significant period during a 12-year career that began in 2008. Known for his composure, vision and leadership in midfield, Mamunul was a central figure in the national setup.

Among his notable achievements, Mamunul lifted multiple domestic league titles and Federation Cups. He also made history as the first Bangladeshi footballer to be recruited in the Indian Super League.

Despite his many accomplishments, Mamunul expressed regret over not being able to guide Bangladesh to a SAFF Championship title. He also reflected on the lack of a formal farewell at the international level, with his final appearance for the national team coming quietly in 2020.

Fortis FC honoured the midfield stalwart with a guard of honour, as teammates and officials paid tribute to one of Bangladesh football’s most enduring figures.
