Bangladesh Under-20 produced a spirited performance to earn a 1-1 draw against India in their final Group B match of the SAFF U-20 Championship 2026 at the National Football Stadium in Malé on Saturday. The result saw India finish top of the group, while Bangladesh advanced to the semifinals with confidence.
India opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Vishal Yadav, who met a perfectly delivered corner with a thumping header to beat Bangladesh goalkeeper Md Ismail Hossain Mahin.
The goal came after sustained pressure from the Indian side, with Yadav timing his run impeccably to rise above the Bangladeshi defence and direct the ball into the top corner. The early strike gave India the initiative and forced Bangladesh to reorganise their defensive shape.
Bangladesh gradually found their rhythm, with the midfield, led by Md Kamal Merdha and Md Manik, linking well with the Sullivan twins, Ronan and Declan, who had earlier made headlines by choosing to represent Bangladesh internationally.
Ronan Sullivan delivered a near-perfect corner deep into stoppage time of the first half. Md Abdul Riyad Fahim rose above the Indian defenders to place the ball powerfully into the net in the 45+10th minute, cancelling out India’s lead and sending the Bangladeshi bench into celebration. It was a textbook set-piece goal, highlighting Bangladesh’s strength in aerial duels and precision in delivery.
The first half, however, was far from calm. Tempers flared on the sidelines, leading to disciplinary action as both teams’ staff became embroiled in heated exchanges. India’s goalkeeping coach Sandip Nandy was sent off in the 45+9th minute following a verbal spat with a member of the Bangladeshi coaching staff, while Bangladesh’s head coach Mark Edward Cox also received a red card, highlighting the intensity and high stakes of the match. India’s head coach Mahesh Gawali was equally involved in the exchanges, making the first half as charged off the pitch as it was on it.
In the second half, Bangladesh made early substitutions, introducing Sree Sumon Soren to bolster the midfield. Later changes included Sani Das and Samuel Raksam to add energy and defensive stability. India responded with Aniket Yadav and Rohen Singh coming on to refresh their attacking options. Despite a flurry of half-chances for both sides, neither could find a breakthrough in the second period, and the match ended 1-1 after five minutes of added time.
With this draw, Bangladesh advance to face Nepal in the semifinals, while India will meet Bhutan. The performance underlines Bangladesh’s growing confidence and ability to compete with regional heavyweights, particularly in high-pressure fixtures. The team’s set-piece proficiency and disciplined defending will be key as they look to challenge for a place in the final.
