Has Cabrera taken charge of his last game as Bangladesh head coach?

Under Cabrera, Bangladesh played 29 games, winning 8, drawing 6 and losing 15

Javier Cabrera perhaps had his last game in charge of Bangladesh team during the last-gasp 2-1 win over the Maldives Saturday if the football federation does not extend the contract which expires next month.

It has been almost three years since the Spaniard joined Bangladesh football team as head coach in January, 2022, initially penning a deal of 11 months.

The contracts extended over the years until December, 2024.

A statement of Romanian coach Aristica Cioaba, who guided Bangladesh Premier League club Police FC as head coach last season, showing interest on men’s national football team job raised curiosity.

“I want to apply for the position of men’s national team coach (Bangladesh). I know the players there. I know the football there and I think I’m suitable for the position,” Cioaba told this reporter.

Cioaba admitted he heard that Bangladesh were looking for a coach and wants to put his name in the hat if Cabrera does not continue.

When queried, Bangladesh Football Federation’s general secretary Imran Hossain Tushar denied the claim and restrained from making any official comment on the matter.

“The board will talk. They will take the decision. There is a lot of time left. His (Cabrera) contract runs until December 31,” said Tushar.

Bangladesh have no more international fixtures this year after playing a couple of FIFA friendlies against the Maldives at home under the guidance of Cabrera.

Under Cabrera, Bangladesh played 29 games, winning eight, drawing six and losing 15.
