Update : 31 Aug 2013, 07:24 PM

Biplob Bhattacharjee, Bangladesh’s long serving goalkeeper, will be honoured by the South Asian Football Federation on September 10 for being a member of the Bangladesh team in eight editions of the Saff Championship. The executive committee of the Saffcame to the decision at a meeting yesterday since Biplob is the only player to represent his country in eight Saff Championships.

Biplob Bhattachajee’s started his career in 1995 and played his first Saff Championship back in 1997 in Kathmandu. Coincidentally, his record breaking feat of longevity after 16 years comes at the same venue as where it all began.

Biplob has been a member of the Bangladesh teams that played in the Saff at Goa (1999), Dhaka (2003), Karachi (2005), Male/Colombo (2008), Dhaka 2009 and New Delhi (2003). He did not play in any matches in the last Saff as than coach Nikola Ilievski felt there was a better player for the position. Nonetheless, Biplob fought his back into the national team afterwards and is still an integral part of the team.

Before departing for Kathmandu, Biplob expressed his desire to retire from the international arena after the Saff Championship. With another international tournament - the Bangabandhu Gold Cup - all set to be held in Dhaka in October, Biplob may choose to stay awhile longer in the national colours he has served so well for so many years.
