Bangladesh U23s begin with crushing defeat

Update : 20 Jul 2017, 09:44 AM
Bangladesh U-23 team began their AFC U-23 Championship 2018 Qualifiers campaign with a 7-0 defeat against a strong Jordan side in the inaugural match of Group E at Faisal Al-Husseini Stadium in the Palestinian city of Hebron, West Bank on Wednesday. The physical appearance and dominating display of Jordan made it difficult for a newly formed Bangladesh team to get anything out of the game. Bangladesh showed some resistance in the opening half which ended 2-0 but Jordan looked more attacking after resumption and scored four goals within quarter of an hour. England-born Australia head coach Andrew Ord fielded his starting XI with Anisur Rahman between the post, Sushanto Tripura, Tutul Hosain Badsha and Nurul Faisal in defence, Sohel Rana, Mohammad Abdullah and Saad Uddin in midfield while Rubel Miya and Jafar Iqbal played as forwards. Hemanta Vincent Biswas started the game but failed to survive for 45 minutes and subsequently got substituted. It was the first official competition for Ord as Bangladesh head coach. He took over the job last month. Both the federation and the coach are treating Bangladesh’s participation in the qualifiers as part of their strategy to form a national squad for the future. Bangladesh have never won a game in this competition. They will face two more strong opponents when they take on Tajikistan and Palestine on Friday and Sunday respectively. What Ord saidThe result was unexpected. There was a huge gap between the levels of the two teams and that made my players lose their confidence during the second half as we couldn’t manage to score any goal. We could not take advantage of the chances we had to score, and the high pressure from the Jordanians made us depend on defensive play. We will try to compensate in the next match against Tajikistan to keep our hope alive for a qualifying spot despite the mission being hard as there are strong teams in this group.
