Former Bangladesh women’s team winger Razia Khatun died after giving birth to a child in Satkhira early Thursday, a press release from Bangladesh Football Federation confirmed. She was 23.
Razia was a regular member of different youth and senior national team squads for six years.
She also played the domestic league before calling it quits.
She was a winning member of the SAFF Under-18 Championship in 2018 before receiving the senior team call for the SAFF Championship in Biratnagar the following year.
“She (Razia) was an important player. That is why she kept on playing from 2013 to 2020,” Golam Rabbani Choton, former coach of Razia during her national team days, told Dhaka Tribune.
Choton, the former national women’s team’s head coach from 2009 to 2023, found it difficult coming to terms with her death at an early age.
He said: “It’s very sad to hear how she died in such a digital age.”
According to media reports, Razia gave birth to a son Wednesday night.
Hours later at around 4am, she breathed her last.
The BFF press release stated that Razia died of excessive bleeding at the house of her village.
The federation expressed deep sadness at her passing away.
