Kings come from behind to prevail in South Asia’s Clasico

Captain and Brazilian playmaker Robson brought the house down with his 80th minute winner that sent the Kings top of Group D with 7 points from 4 games

Bangladesh Premier League champions Bashundhara Kings came from behind to script their first ever victory against Indian Super League outfit Mohun Bagan Super Giant of Kolkata in Tuesday’s AFC Cup clash in the capital’s Kings Arena. 

The Group D tie was dubbed South Asia’s “Clasico” and the lively encounter lived upto its billing as Indian forward Liston Colaco gave the visitors the lead in the 17th minute before Brazilian midfielder Miguel Figueira brought parity on the stroke of half time.  

Captain and Brazilian playmaker Robson Robinho then brought the house down with his 80th minute winner that sent the Kings top of the group with seven points from four games. 

Mohun Bagan also have the same number of points having played four matches but the Kings are ahead by virtue of a superior head to head record.

Odisha FC of India are third with six points from four games while the Maldives’ Maziya are at the bottom with three points from the same number of outings as the other three teams of the group.

Oscar Bruzon's charges will host Maziya on November 27 before traveling to India to play their last group stage match against Odisha on December 11.

Each of the Group D teams of the second-tier Asian club competition will play the other three sides in a home-and-away round-robin format.

Only the table-toppers will progress to the inter-zone play-off semi-finals.

The Kings earlier began their campaign with a 3-1 defeat away to Maziya before reviving their hopes with a 3-2 win at home to Odisha.

The record four-time consecutive BPL champions then drew 2-2 with Mohun Bagan in Odisha. 

Tuesday’s triumph was their first against Mohun Bagan in the continental competition with two other encounters in May 2022 and August 2021 resulting in a 4-0 loss and 1-1 draw.
