Abahani Limited cut ties with Mario Lemos and decided to replace the Portuguese with veteran Argentine tactician Diego Andres Cruciani as the new head coach of the club.

Cruciani was the head coach of Bangladesh national football team when they became runners-up at the 2005 SAFF Championship.

His next destination was Abahani as the Argentine joined the Sky Blues for a season in 2007 when the club won the debut edition of the country’s professional football league.

The 61-year old also coached the Maldives national team and Bangladesh Premier League club Saif Sporting Club since then.

The new appointment means Lemos’ long chapter with the Sky Blues comes to an end.

Lemos, who joined Abahani in 2018 and guided the Dhanmondi giants for four consecutive seasons, shared a facebook post Friday with the club's logo stating: “Thank you for everything Abahani!”

The Portuguese coach confirmed his departure to Dhaka Tribune, saying: “I always will be grateful to Abahani.”

Lemos started his journey at Abahani with a bang as he guided the club to the knockout stage of the AFC Cup for the first time ever after becoming South Asia Zone champions.

The 37-year old had a Federation Cup and Independence Cup title with the club but could not win the premier league crown which perhaps prompted the six-time professional league champions to bring back Cruciani.

Cruciani was a defender during his playing career and represented different Argentine clubs in the 1970s and 80s.

He also played for Argentina Under-20 national team.

After starting his coaching career in the 90s, Cruciani’s first team in South Asia was Bangladesh as he guided both the national side and then Abahani who later became BPL champions.

Abahani also changed the manager of the team by appointing the club’s former footballer and trainer Kazi Nazrul Islam replacing Satyajit Das Rupu.
