Bangladesh Police Football Club secured their best place in the Bangladesh Premier League as the 2022-23 season concluded Saturday with the rising outfit defeating Chattogram Abahani Limited 3-2 in Munshiganj to confirm third sport ahead of three former champions.
They were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to Mohammad Abdullah, Mateo Palacios and Robiul Hasan before conceding two goals against the port city side, who finished in eighth position with 21 points.
Traditional powerhouse Mohammedan Sporting Club Ltd ended fourth after outplaying Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society in Comilla while former treble winners Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra beat the already relegated Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad KC 3-2 at Bashundhara Sports Complex in Dhaka.
Police earned 35 points, three more than Mohammedan and five more than fifth-placed Sheikh Russel.
Former BPL winners Lt. Shekh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Ltd emerged sixth and are 11 points behind Police.
Bashundhara Kings earlier secured fourth consecutive title before taking their points tally to 55 while Abahani finished runners-up with 40 points.
It was a giant step upward for Police in the league from the previous 2020 season where they ended eighth.
They placed ninth in the earlier edition after being promoted to the top flight in 2020.
This season, they also reached the semi-finals of the Independence Cup for the first time but saw the exit door from the group stage of the Federation Cup.
